The quilts which have been the subject of the last month's blog posts are finally hanging in the Intensive Care Unit at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven. Each piece measures 96"x42", is made of hand dyed artisan fabrics, and is heavily quilted with rayon and polyester threads. They have been permanantly mounted in floating frames and hang side by side across from the nursing station in a long hallway.
It has been a wonderful creative exercise to work on these pieces. The timeline for design, ordering product and delivery of the final work was very tight, which meant many long hours of piecing and quilting as well as several bouts of "un-sewing" when things didn't go as planned. The vendors I used for fabrics were outstanding. Laura Wasilowski delivered a bundle of her green Artfabrik for Farmlands on approval, as did Maureen Hardy Schmidt. The gold fabrics in Marsh View are mostly from Cherrywood, whose customer service was over the top. Thank you all for helping bring these projects to fruition!
When writing the proposal for this installation, I included a design for a third quilt of the same size. I will be working on that quilt, Sound View, next... after a bit of a break. Two small commissions are calling, and I think I remember that I have a family that just might need a bit of attention after being told "Mommy is working - can that wait?" for the last month.

And on the technical side...did you have to apply flame retardant or any varnishes/finishes to the front to protect from soiling? (I've got something I'm working on, too!)
