Red Rocks

My friend Diane has wanderlust. She is traveling to Australia soon, and I am jealous. It has been nearly 30 years since I have been there (am I really that old?) and I would love to go back and see the sparse desert again, feel the breeze from the harbour and sit under the Southern Cross. I can be an armchair traveler, though, and revisit my year "down under" either by surfing the amazing websites of Australian artists or thumbing through many books.
This five paneled piece, Red Rocks, reminds me of some of the beautiful colors of the desert monoliths as they rise from the empty landscape of Central Australia. It is made completely of Japanese fabrics, quilted with sticks and stones, and embellished with Laura Wasilowski's gorgeous hand dyed threads. It is currently hanging in my front hall and is one of my husband's favorite quilts.
