For those of us interested in art and design as they are explored in textiles, having a collection at our finger tips of fine work by masterful artists is a reality with this, the second book in the Masters Art Quilts series. Through the perceptive introductions by the well known fiber artist and curator Martha Sielman, we are led into the worlds created by a diverse group of artists. Fabric may be the common language that they use, but their creations are as diverse as the artists themselves.
This book is a compilation of messages and meaning, hidden in the metaphors of fabric and stitch.
Tessellation Tiles 2005 Pamela Fitzsimons |
Leaf Motif 2009 Laura Wasilowski |
Landscapes and textures also cover the surfaces of Laura Wasilowski's quilts, with such different results. Her pieces are in the genre of the "Story Quilt". Brightly dyed cottons and silks are fused in place, often creating the illusion of wood block printing on fabric. Her stories are of home on the plains of Illinois, in the farmhouses of her childhood, and the expanse of her imagination. Landscapes don't stand still, but vibrate and sway with color.
Little Night Serenade #13 Allegro 2007 Izabella Baykova |
These are just three of the forty artists represented by Sielman's book. Imagine a collection of quilts, diverse in beauty, distinct in style, and divergent in theme. Imagine them all together in one place.
Imagine owning this book.
