Early Morning Studio Time...

There hasn't been much time for sewing lately... or blogging, for that matter! December was a full month: we had visitors from Maine, Vermont, and California who spent the holidays with us as we rang in the new year. School parties, cookie swaps, and Christmas shopping were also part of the festivities. On top of that- as many of the readers of my blog may know - I started a new job as Editor of Quilting Arts Magazine. So yes! December was a busy month!

As part of my editorial duties at QA, I will be blogging through the Quilting Daily website, so this, my personal blog, won't be updated very frequently. However, I just had to do a little show-and-tell from my early morning sewing this morning...

As Seen In Stitch magazine, Winter 2008

The linen twill patchwork tote which was designed by Susan Wasinger took about 1 hour to make, using all vintage fabrics from my stash. I had just enough of the funky 1950's feedsack material to make the band of color without piecing a thing... just love it when something like that happens.

My "studio" goal for 2012 will be to keep working in my studio on the weekends, even if it has to be at 6 am... and to hone my skills in the fiber arts. So much fabric, so many ideas, so little time... but so blessed to be doing what I love and living out my dreams.

Spectacular Advent Calendar

Last night I was surfing the web, knowing I should be writing my post for today, but totally underwhelmed by my own attempts at marking the season of Advent. I've started pulling my boxes of decorations from the attic, hanging some lights, and arranging my collection of nativity sets, but I was still feeling uninspired.

Wait a minute... what is that... could it be...

Yes. The most creative and spectacular Advent Calendar I have ever seen... and a tutorial to boot! One of my favorite blogs, Stuff You Can't Have, features the work of Catherine McGeaver from Oakland, CA and she has come up with a great idea for an Advent Calendar that puts us all to shame. It combines so many things that I love: secret boxes, sequential artwork, prayer flags (at least their shapes and the hanging of a garland), vintage textiles, and mixed media. Go to her site linked above for the full tutorial, and let her know that you saw her work here. What a treasure... and it is time to open the first box on your own Advent Calendars!

Photo and Fiber Donation

Once again, Virginia Speigel has organized a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society which will take place on Feb. 15 & 16 of next year. I was so pleased to be asked to make a donation of three small packets to be given as "premiums" to people who donate to the cause.

Here is a quick "sneak peak" of part of my donation... I have made three ATC's using vintage maps, stamps, papers, and millinery flowers for some lucky donors. The full packets will contain vintage papers, stamps, and other ephemera to use in artwork. The three pieces honor the memories of my parents and a close friend, all who died of cancer.

Thank you, Virginia, for allowing me to share my artwork and honor those whom I have loved and lost. And thanks to all of you who will make donations in February and receive mementos from the many artists who have donated their work.

Together, we can all make a difference. Join me and my fellow fiber artists in supporting this worthy cause!

Music For Turkeys to Cook By

Music For Turkeys to Cook By... how I love that phrase! This turkey will be baking dozens of rolls, making a pan of apple crisp, and roasting several pounds of brussel sprouts today.

And the music? I'll start with something classical: Bach Preludes or some of Yo-Yo Ma's cello pieces will make the dicing and slicing go faster.

I'll be peeling apples to Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant, remembering happy times in my childhood kitchen.

Bread rises best when accompanied by quiet jazz, so my favorite pianist, Cyrus Chestnut, will encourage the yeast with his album "Blessed Quietness".

We will be celebrating the holiday in a home that was built not long after the first Thanksgiving on the shores of the Connecticut River...

Fiberactions Reveal Day: Structure

I loved the term "Structure" for this month's challenge. It really got me thinking about how structured my life really is, and how I rely on certain constants to keep me on track. When those constants have changed, even slightly, the course of my life has been changed forever.

As I started this piece and was pulling the fabrics from my stash, my family structure was in turmoil. We were beginning a new school year, our state had been hit by a hurricane, and we had just received power back in our town after spending nearly a week in the dark. No power for us means no water, electricity, sewer, or refrigeration. Our structure was shaken to the core. Fast forward two months as I was quilting and binding the piece to the next natural disaster - a freak snow storm- which left our neighbors to the north in the same situation of turmoil.

I have experienced a natural disaster which change the face of a city: the 1989 San Francisco Earthquake moved not only buildings, but the city planners as they had to redesign highways and public spaces. I have lived through emotional shock waves as well, such as losing my parents, and have felt the pain of a young life cut short by a horrible accident. All of these events, whether physical or emotional, have changed me, the world around me, and my family. Some of the changes have been for the better, and others have not. But they all have left their mark on the structure of my soul.

The working title of this piece was "Fault Lines", but I have decided to call it "Fall Interrupted". It is based on a picture of a rock taken in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, at one of my favorite places in the world. This is where I go to think, to feel the ocean breeze, and to cast my troubles to the wind. You can see in the photograph where the granite is split with quartz, and where each sliver of stone has moved, its structure altered forever, by a moment when the earth moved and the strength of the stone was not enough to keep its structure intact.

How Long Does It Take?

How Long Did That Take?

That question just drives me crazy. Inevitably, each time I show my work, someone asks me how long it takes to make one of my pieces. I know that some people want to initiate a conversations with me, and that is an easy way to do it. Others ask because they see the price tag of my work and think either a) it is a bargain (not usually!) or b) it is overpriced (also not something I hear often) or c) it-must-take-a-long-time-to-ask-that-much-money-for-such-a-small-piece (the usual justification).

Do I tell them? How can I calculate the amount of time I spend on a piece of artwork? Let's see if I can really count the hours it takes to pull together a beautiful collage...

From start to finish:
Robin with Mountain Laurel

Research on Robin Pose: (ahem... staring out the window, surfing the net, sifting through photos, then staring out the window again)... 1 hour.

Drawing and Designing Said Robin, Making Pattern: 2 hours.

Research on Mountain Laurel: (Walking outside, sketching, surfing the net, sifting through photos, then going back outside)... 1 hour.

Sourcing Map of Connecticut: LOTS of time on Ebay one night until I found a seller in Canada with a whole stack of great maps whose Copyright had expired. This map is a 1917 original (the back is actually the state of Florida) from an atlas. Since I bought about 15 maps from one seller over the course of 3 days, lets say 30 minutes per map. 1/2 hour

Choosing Fabrics for Collage: Ugh. That took quite a bit of trial and error, probably 2 hours in the end.

Have you noticed that 6 1/2 hours have been spent so far, and not a bit of cutting, pasting, sewing, framing or "art" has been accomplished?

Sewing project together: 2 hours
Framing: This includes ordering the custom mat board, picking it up from the framer, matting the piece, cleaning the pre-made frame, and getting the piece ready to show. 2 1/2 hours.

Total: 15 hours

What is not included in that time? Learning and perfecting the technique, for one. So far, that has taken five years. How about sourcing fabric (16 different pieces of fabric for this collage), thread (15 different colors in this piece), frames, and matting materials? Does anyone consider just "thinking" about a project and ruminating for hours and hours in their design time?

How about the phone calls and studio meetings with clients preparing proposals for commissions? I know that lawyers are paid for these types of activities, but artists rarely even consider them when pricing their work.

The real answer to the question of "How long does it take?" is "It takes a lifetime"*. A lifetime of experiences, learning, creating, and experimenting. A lifetime of collecting materials, preparing proposals, and mastering techniques. A lifetime of errors in judgement, celebrations of success, and moments of inspiration.

I would welcome any advice on helping the public understand just how long it takes...

And by the way, "Robin With Mountain Laurel" will be matted, framed, and ready to purchase at my next Open Studio Nov. 19th and 20th at the Guilford Art Center, in Guilford, CT. The Price is $400. And it took a long time to make :-).

not only for me,

but for my family.

She spent her last semester in London, and produced this gorgeous piece that I purchased for my husband (OK, for me).

Jane Sassman's Card Set

I find it interesting how nature inspires so many people in so many different ways. Jane's work is inspired by the flora and fauna around her, as is mine, but our interpretation of those design elements are so different.

"Hoo's" Hungry?

For the past several years, the Shoreline Arts Trail Open Studio's group supports a local charity, partnering with them to increase awareness for their cause and raise money to support their organization. Last year we raised funds for Roses for Autism which is both a local business and a wonderful group that employs autistic adults with meaningful work.

During our Open Studios on Nov. 19 & 20 this year, we will be supporting the Community Dining Room of the Shoreline. In their own words:

"The Community Dinging Room is committed to serving the community by feeding the hungry and helping with other basic human needs. We strive to promote public awareness of the impact of hunger and isolation in our society. We are dedicated to helping our guests with their practical needs through referrals and fellowship".

These sweet little owls will be available as "thank you" gifts to patrons at my Open Studio at the Guilford Art Center on the weekend of Nov. 19 & 20. For a suggested donation of $10 or more to the Community Dining Room, 20 (or more if I have time!) lucky donors will receive a small stuffed owl - because anyone who gives a "hoot" about hunger should be rewarded...

Great Weekend and Studio Update

What a great weekend - the last of the summer weather, two days outside in glorious sunshine, and a successful art fair.

We had the perfect weather, good sales, and I made great contacts with other artists and new clients.

After breakind down the tent and putting all of my artwork back in their protective cardboard sleeves, I brought everything back home and rearranged my studio walls.

Threads are sorted by color, with a long hanging behind them in an awkward corner.

Mittens purchased by fellow quilt artist Mary Lachman are now adorning my wall above a closet. Don't they just sing with color and creativity?

My husband is checking out my newly arranged desk area. How do you like the "Art Quilts" banner? That was made in a flash using the technique developed by Tonya Riccuci and described in her book "Word Play Quilts".

Now back to work!

This past February, I had a wonderful opportunity: I flew to Cleveland Ohio and taped three segments for Quilting Arts TV. Not only was it great to meet Pokey Bolton, Helen Gregory, Lindsey Murray, and the whole "behind the scenes crew" at the studios, I also became friends with award winning fiber artist and quilter Diane Doran who was taping at the same time. Her work is a unique blend of photography and quilting as she uses digital technology to create the images on her quilts. I could NEVER in my wildest dreams figure out how she does it, but we are fortunate that Diane is sharing her methods and techniques with the greater fiber art community.

I am just back from my favorite resale shops... with the most amazing loot.

This vintage 1950-something Smith-Corona "Super" is going to be my forever friend... I have been looking for a typewriter for several years, and this is a keeper! It is in pristine condition, and has two extra spools for ribbon. Interestingly, there is no number one or exclamation point. Am I not supposed to be excited? Do I use an "l" for a 1? Do I have to turn the paper upside down and substitute an inverted "i" for a "!"? I will do all that and more. It put me back all of $12.... !!!!!

Next, you can drool over these gorgeous kid gloves. Perfect. Never worn. The lining is silk, and the tag reads, "Dayne Taylor, Made in Italy, size 6 1/2". I have special plans for these beauties, and yes, I am definitely cutting them up. These cost a pricey $5. Not so shabby. The rest of my $20 bill was spent on a pair of crocheted gloves, not nearly as pretty, but lovely, and those will also work their way into my artwork.

The next store had vintage snaps, zippers, and a few books, including an outdated dictionary and a book on child rearing from 1957. I bought it for the humor, not the advice... those two were free, because I spent the wad ($3) on a piece of history - a book of essays denouncing Nazism written in 1934. All I can think is "if only people had listened". It is chilling to know what we know now and have a record of the resistance. I am very interested to read it from an historical perspective.

Stay tuned for seeing these treasures again, hopefully as repurposed pieces of art.

Self Portraits...

What do you look like? My art quilt group is making a portrait quilt, and this is my interpretation of how I look these days. I drew a quick sketch on a piece of paper, traced it onto interfacing, then used my sewing machine to make the lines. (See Jane LaFazio's article in this Spring's Quilting Arts Magazine describing this technique). The bottom piece of fabric was muslin, with a stencil printed fabric as background. After sketching the outline in thread, I cut away the waste muslin to reveal the background, and added shading to the dress and face with water soluble crayons.You try it - Draw a picture of yourself, then interpret it in cloth... That is such a hard thing for me to do, because I don't look in the mirror that often and really think about my features. I always draw the face, with an elongated nose, round glasses, and dopey haircut.

The pictures in my head just doesn't match the reality in the mirror. My nose isn't that long... my glasses are rectangular, and my face isn't an oval. And take a look at that red sailor suit ... I don't think I've had an outfit that tame for 40 years, but it is still what I draw when I think of myself and how I look.

Pond Queen

As time goes by, my methods have also changed. A few (6) years ago I made this self portrait, Pond Queen. I had been spending hours and hours at the pond on our property, watching the tadpoles turn into frogs, looking for snapping turtles with my boys, and just enjoying nature. You can see in this portrait that I still have that elongated face and extra large nose, even though this one was made in an entirely different style from the one above. It reflects what I was feeling and exploring at the time, using a different voice for a different time of my life.

My boy is a doodler and inventor of mythical creatures, so the thought of making his own cards to trade with friends was quite appealing. We made 12 cards this afternoon, including:

I really scored big in his nine year old eyes when I pulled a copy of 1000 Artist Trading Cards off the shelf and turned to page 250 and showed him where his Mom's ATC's are featured. You did that??? Why didn't you tell me?

Mapping The Journey: New Jersey Shorebird

Boy, naming this one was a breeze...

New Jersey Shorebird

This is another in the series of birds on maps that I am currently making. This little shore bird is looking for his dinner on the beaches of New Jersey, oblivious to the comings and goings of his human cousins. The bird has such lovely wings and feathers, all tipped with white and stitched by machine in a shimmering rayon thread...

The maps for this series are so fun. I recently found an international seller on Ebay who has been cutting the maps from vintage atlas books, and offering them for a very reasonable price. Each map is more than 65 years old (in this case the map is from 1917) and they all have an aged quality that only comes with the patina of time.

After I complete the collage, I edge the piece in a boldly colored art paper, then another layer of cut map (sometimes a newer map, with only about 1/4" showing). The piece is then matted and framed. Look for a post soon that shows the final product, ready for "market".

Migration Series: Ruby Throated Hummingbird

Migration Story: Ruby Throated Hummingbirds

Who doesn't mark the highpoints of a season by the birds in their back yard? Lately, I've been noticing a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird as she flits between the trailing morning glories and purple petunias on my deck. She doesn't stop for long, but drinks some nectar and moves quickly on to her next course in the neighbor's garden.

This piece in my Migration Story series marks the Spring migration of this beautiful little bird. At some point in the coldest months of January and February, these tiny creatures pack on 2-3 grams of fat, nearly doubling their body weight. The length of the day signals the males to fly north from Central America, landing on the Gulf of Mexico and making their way to their nesting areas in New England and Canada. These are the most common hummingbirds, and the most easily identifiable by their red throats and humming wings. The birds stay until late summer/early fall, then make their journey south again for the winter.

This piece is made, as you can see from the photo, of small bits of fabric and a 1917 vintage railroad map. After carefully creating the fabric collage, the piece is stitched by machine, and then embellished with hand dyed threads. It will be framed to 16x20", and available for purchase at my upcoming open studio and art fair events this autumn. Stay tuned for more information!

Prayer Flags for My Community

Sometimes, life just happens. It just knocks on your door, shakes your floorboards, and rains on your parade... then shuts off your lights, invades your computer, and empties your refrigerator.

That, my friends, is a quick synopsis of "Life" for those of us in Southern New England over the last two weeks.

It all started with an earthquake. Then a hurricane. Then toppled trees, flooded streams, and power failures. Then the fun started.

Troubled Waters and Line Workers

After a week without power and water, an unplanned trip to stay with my siblings, delayed school openings for my three younger children, and an overflowing compost pile with a direct path to my thawed freezer and refrigerator, it is time to get back to normal life. I feel so lucky that we had no damage to our property and that my family is safe. I feel so sad, though, for all of those in the path of the storm who are still suffering from the flooding and terrible surge of the sea. The following prayer flags are for them.

Lost Threads

Lost Threads is a prayer flag for Ann Brauer and all other artists who lost their studios. How sad would it be to see your work space floating down the street in a flash flood? That is just what happened to Ann. My prayer is that her new space will be dry, inspiring, and fulfilling.

Power and Light

I've heard that there are still, 10 days post storm, more than 300 customers in Connecticut without power. For us, that meant we had no water or cooking facilities, either. I pray that the power comes on and that life can resume for those people as soon as possible. The six flowers on the flag are for the six days our neighborhood was in the dark.

Community Support

Where would we be without our neighbors? This is a prayer of thanks for our community, which opened its doors and its arms wide to all in need. Our entire town and three surrounding communities had no power for more than 24 hours. When nearly 100,000 people can't shower, cook normally, communicate, or even leave their homes because of hundreds of toppled trees and downed wires, we all pitch in. Thank you for sharing hot showers, freezer space, and dinners with those in need. Thank you for powering up your personal chain saws and clearing the streets near your homes. Thank you for acting like a community.

Troubled Waters and Line Workers

As we drove home on Saturday afternoon from our unplanned visit to Northern Vermont, we were astounded by the amount of damage we saw at the riverbeds and creeks. The scenic covered bridges that were washed away will never be replaced. Whole towns are cut off from the outside world, both by washed out roads and damaged electric wires. I pray that they are made whole, and that the waters recede quickly.

Lastly, the most fragile flag of all says "many thanks" to the line workers who came to our rescue. This flag is made entirely of paper and tea bags... fragile indeed. Fifteen trucks were parked at a local motel this week where workers from all over New England stayed between shifts. They helped us, and I want to extend a very heart felt "thanks" for getting the job done. Our lives are as fragile as the paper of this flag, and they have helped return our frayed nerves to normal.

Mapping the Journey: Ohio Home

Ohio Commission

This month I completed several projects in my series of "Map" and "Migration" pieces... They all hold special meanings for me and the people who purchase them. The Ohio piece, shown above, is one of two pieces for a very special client. She is using this picture as a memorial to her parents, and a nod to her home state of Ohio. Her home town is visible just above the female cardinal's head, and her sister's home is directly under the top trillium. It was a fun challenge to make sure that the towns were visible, the flowers were accurate, the composition was pleasing, and the birds fit all within the space allotted.

The map is a vintage early 20th century Rand McNally road map with absolutely beautiful colors and amazing details for a piece of paper more than 100 years old. Both pieces featured the two cardinals and three trillium, but were arranged differently.

So how is one of these pieces made? I start with knowing the finished size and finding an appropriate map (copyright expired) to use as a background. The map is then cleaned and ironed, as well as inspected for any tears or marks that need to be repaired or covered. I then attach the paper to a stiff interfacing using either glue or fusible web. The collage is built on top, then framed behind acid free mat board.

Seeing Fitzsimons' depiction of the passage of time on a landscape through a collection of her quilts is invaluable.

Landscapes and textures also cover the surfaces of Laura Wasilowski's quilts, with such different results. Her pieces are in the genre of the "Story Quilt". Brightly dyed cottons and silks are fused in place, often creating the illusion of wood block printing on fabric. Her stories are of home on the plains of Illinois, in the farmhouses of her childhood, and the expanse of her imagination. Landscapes don't stand still, but vibrate and sway with color.

Paint, silk, and stich work together to create the visual stories of Izabella Baykova's work. Nine of her pieces are included in the book, and it is easy to understand why her artistry is so well respected. Baykova's native Russian city scapes and classic fairy tales are recreated in fabric and tell incrediby detailed stories through fiber, paint, and thread.

These are just three of the forty artists represented by Sielman's book. Imagine a collection of quilts, diverse in beauty, distinct in style, and divergent in theme. Imagine them all together in one place.

Mapping the Journey

Ancestral Home

I love a good map. I think this fascination started as a child when my family took road trips all over New England. We would pile into the family sedan, my father always driving, and my mother always knitting in the front seat. A sleeve of peppermint Life Savers would be passed around, in hopes of keeping the three siblings in the back seat quiet, and the trip would begin. In a short while, the glove compartment would open and the maps would emerge. I remember being the one who would mark the journey we were taking, always interested in finding the shortest route, the most scenic view, and the tallest mountain. Then I'd heave a sigh of relief if I could coax the map back into its previous folded shape without creating an outcry from my siblings who would complain if the map encroached on any of their precious space (I always sat in the middle).

Fast forward (ahem) at least forty years, and not much has changed. My husband always drives. I am the one sitting in the front seat knitting, and our four children all have love/hate relationships with each other as well as with the maps we pass to the back seat. Of course, the gps has changed our navigation, but the maps of New England still live in our glove compartment "just in case".

Several years ago I started using vintage maps as the bases of my fabric collages. I am always on the look out for beautiful maps (whose copyright has expired) for use in my work. The nest in "Ancestral Home" was built upon an island created from scraps of two maps of Ohio. Birds perch on the shores of the great lakes in several of my pieces, and many new pieces are in the works. So far I have always used the original maps, but I'm considering using copies in the future so I can focus my resources on creating more collages instead of searching for the maps.

This map of Rhode Island is from an old Atlas, and will have an American Bittern on top, as well as reeds and rushes partially hiding the bird.

The map of Connecticut will be the base for a collage of a shore bird searching in the mud for some dinner.

Prayer Flag Project Update

30 flags for June

After posting nearly every day in June about my Prayer Flags, I took most of the month of July "off"... but only from blogging, not from creating.

The Prayer Flag Project has now moved into a new phase and become a blog of its own, aptly named "The Prayer Flag Project" and can be found at theprayerflagproject.blogspot.com. This is now a collective project, and I have asked artists from around the world to join me in making flags. Each flag is created in the artist's own style, then hung outside for a while, its words and sentiment dissolving into the wind and being spread to all whom the wind touches. They are a living, breathing, kinetic journal of our hopes, dreams, and concerns.

Please join us in this journey. So far, 15 artists have submitted prayer flags for inclusion in the blog. More have added photos to the flickr stream created for this project, and about 30 additional artists have committed to making at least one flag. All of the information on the project, including a brief tutorial and an overview of the goals of the project can be found here.

I was Never One to Waste...

In my childhood home, "waste" was a dirty word. We didn't throw out anything. I mean anything. Yogurt containers were used until they cracked. Brown paper bags multiplied in their own kitchen cupboard until they spilled out when the door was opened. Kitchen scraps were all composted. New towels were given to my parents for their 25th wedding anniversary, replacing (you guessed it) the towels they had received 25 years earlier... then the old towels were used for rags. Waste not, want not!

So you can imagine, when I have scraps in my studio, I usually don't throw them out. They are sorted by color and stored in separate bins, waiting to find their way into the next project. But what about the scraps that are just too small? Too narrow? Slivers of colored fabric, paper or thread?

Those are used too.

Here's my newest piece, Ancestral Home, using reclaimed studio scraps. The handmade blue paper is left over from a project I'll feature next year (hush-hush). The island shape is cut from two antique maps of the state of Ohio. I had purchased two 100+ year old maps for a commission, and salvaged the edges. From the leftover pieces, I cut around the Ohio River using that as a border, and glued the pieces together into the resulting shape. The mid layer of paper is from old sheet music (back page) and was inked, then cut into squares and rectangles. I sewed around each piece to add to the texture and outline them in color.

All of the fibers in the nest are scraps from different projects, and the velvet flowers were gleaned from a vintage hat. Lastly, the "eggs" were picked up from a beach in Maine, my ancestral home, then inked and glued in place.

I really went out of my comfort zone and had the piece professionally framed in a shadow box (after taking the picture to the right) which made a huge difference in the presentation. I'll get a better photo soon.

Prayer Flag Project Day 30: Stories

Today's flag is for our Stories. We all have them, we all tell them, but do we all listen to each other? I recently read a fascinating novel, The Postmistress, by Sarah Blake. It was a good read, and I won't go into the plot, but one theme running through out the book was the need for us all to pay attention - real attention- to what happens around us. To listen. To act. To care. I pray that we listen to each other, hear the needs of our fellow man, and act accordingly.

The flag is composed of three pieces of antique fabrics sewn together. The words "Listen to my Story" are embroidered under the yo-yos. The tag reads will you listen to me and was snipped from the pages of a novel.

Prayer Flag Project Day 29: Innocence Lost

Tonight's news brought words my family has heard before. Tragedy, heartbreak, sadness. An 18 year old boy in a neighboring town had fallen from a cliff, broken his back, and cracked his skull. The town is stunned and grief stricken, and the child is critically injured. But what could they do for him? They prayed. The news cameras focused not on the tragedy, but on the full church with young and old alike on their knees asking for intervention.

My prayer is for the boy's classmates, who have lost so much with this accident. They now know, without a doubt in their minds, that the safety they felt just hours before this tragedy is really an illusion. This is a difficult lesson which we all eventually experience, but it is so hard to see an entire community learn it at once. I pray they are careful, and know that their lives are precious. I hope they find peace, and that their prayers are answered.

The linen of the flag was an embroidered bag, and the words on the tag read, "the hero of his own life story" and were clipped from a vintage biography.

Prayer Flag Project Day 28: Tears of Joy

The flag is made of natural linen, as well as a piece of a vintage placemat. The tag simply states the theme of the prayer, Tears of Joy.

Prayer Flag Project Day 27: Silver and Gold

Summer is a happy and busy time in our neighborhood. This first week of freedom from school finds my young boys playing with the neighborhood children. All six of "the gang" roam the woods, look for frogs, fish in the pond, dig tunnels, and swim together in an endless, old fashioned, unscheduled romp. No TV, no video games, no whining. It is a blessing, for which I am very thankful. My prayer is that they always have time like this to roam, wonder, explore, and create. I hope they always hold the "Silver and Gold" of old friendships and new, dear in their hearts.

The flag is a simple piece of linen embellished with a circle of contrasting upholstery fabric and a doily. Small bits of embroidery are peeking out, adding a pale tint of purple and blue to the piece. The tag reads, "Make their life happy. They are young but once".

Prayer Flag Project Day 26: Birds

Each Sunday's theme so far has been taken from a hymn, and this one is stretching it a bit, but let's just say I used the words of the song to my advantage...

I will lift you up on eagle's wings ... and hold you in the palm of my hand.

I do like the imagery in that refrain, and know that the song is a favorite of many in my husband's family. My prayer is that we recognize the fragile among us and give them hope, safety, and stability.

The flag is made from linen, upholstery scraps and a used dryer sheet. The words of the hymn's refrain are written with the sewing machine in beige thread, and are barely readable. The feather is not of an eagle, but a hairy woodpecker which met its demise near my backyard bird feeder. "Learn what is being done in your state for the protection of birds, and do something to help" is the message on the tag.

Saturday's prayer is for the summer months... do something, anything, that will make you smarter, wiser, healthier, or happier. Do something, anything, that will make the world cleaner, more peaceful, safer, or kinder. Do something, anything, that will keep your hands busy, your heart willing, and your mind open.

Just do something, anything.

This flag is made of a scrap of linen which is embellished with 11 postage stamps. Nine of the stamps are held in place with thread stitching and a stamped and dyed paper teabag. The stamps on top of the paper collage are from France, and show a picture of Heloise and Abelard. They always remind me of a favorite college professor, Fr. Enrico Garzilli, who wrote a musical about the love affair between the doomed lovers and performed part of the libretto for a packed audience of his students more than 25 years ago. Now THAT was Something.

Prayer Flag Project Day 24: For Those Who Mend

Today's flag is for the people in our lives who "keep it all together" and keep us whole.

It is a prayer for the doctors and nurses who stitch our wounds, and for the therapist who heals our hearts. It is for the mechanic who patches our tires, and for the friends whose stories intertwine with our own. It is for the friends I've made - yet never met- on the internet, whose artistry is kept together with a thread...

This flag is one of my favorites. It is made of a folded piece of stamped linen which was embroidered by someone in my husband's family. The heart is cut from a piece of worn out jeans, and the words on the tag were snipped from a German phrasebook. Their translation reads, "Will you send this to the tailor".

Prayer Flag Project Day 23: Organization

Thursday's prayer is for organization, pure and simple.

This project has been all encompassing in my once clean studio. Bits of linen are piled on my cutting table. Scraps of threads litter the floor. I can't find my favorite thimble, and the fabric scissors have now been used multiple times to cut paper. Time to breathe easier and turn on some soothing classical music, tie an apron around my waist, and clean. I will feel more creative when that chore is done.

The flag is made of a single piece of heavy lace, with the strips of fabric sewn in place. All of the fabrics were piled in a heap on the cutting table, and they "chose themselves". The tag reads, "He has put everything back in his box again"... soon!

Prayer Flag Project Day 22: Safe Travels

This weekend, nearly *everyone* I know will be traveling. Wednesday's flag is for safe travels... and in my case, a quiet and uneventful car ride with my children.

The flag is made of a single layer of upholstery linen with a piece of a vintage map sewn on top. The bubble letters we all practiced in 8th grade study hall are embroidered by machine, and their crookedness is a testament to the fact that I never really did learn how to make them ;-).

The words on the tag read, "Explain how to read a road map" on one side, and "a trip with your family" on the other. So for all of you who travel by road, boat, horse, bus, plane, cycle, boat, or foot, this one's for you.

Prayer Flag Project Day 21: Wings

Tuesday's prayer is for wings...

It is graduation season here in New England. Due to an unbelievable amount of snow and snow days, our local schools are dismissing students two weeks later than originally planned, and Guilford's graduation happens this Friday afternoon at our town green. The preparations are being made: platforms are being constructed, the orchestra is practicing Pomp and Circumstance, and hundreds of white chairs will be carefully unfolded by legions of volunteers for the families of our bright young students. We are so fortunate to have a celebration open to the entire town, and many who don't have children in the class of 2011 will attend, just to see the moving ceremony.

I pray that our children fledge the nest with confidence and adventure. I hope they feel ready to tackle the new experience that the changes of graduation bring. I pray for good strong wings, and loving parents to help guide their first flights of independence.

Wings is made of a piece of folded linen cloth that was overlaid with a scrap of antique lace. The centers of the flowers are bunches of french knots using hand dyed thread from Laura Wasilowski. The tag reads: Fly-up: receive their wings. It refers to the ceremony when, in the Girl Scout tradition, a "Brownie" moves to the next level of "Intermediate Scout" and receives a badge that has wings.

Prayer Flag Project Day 20: Play Time

Today's prayer is for play time this summer for our children. According to recent government statistics, in the last 30 years, the incidence of childhood obesity has tripled to 15%, and is still on the rise. There are two primary reasons for this increase: our children eat too much, and are not getting the exercise that they need. I pray that all parents take a good hard look at their own habits and choices (me included!), and make a change for the sake of their children. This summer, I pray that our children get outside, swim at a real beach, toss a ball in an unstructured game, pedal their bikes around safe neighborhoods, play tag with the fire flies, and sit around a campfire. I pray for kids to be kids.

This flag is made of a salvaged linen doily set that had been embroidered but never completely finished on the edges. The tag reads, "1. Know how to play at least one game" and was snipped from a vintage Girl Scout handbook.

Prayer Flag Project: Day 19, Oh Happy Day

Today's flag is named for the hymn, "Oh Happy Day". Although this music is more than 100 years old, most of us know it by its Gospel version by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. I pray that all have the opportunity to lift their voices and sing their own songs... in an environment that encourages religious freedom and cultural expression.

If you have never had the opportunity to hear real gospel, you must seek one out. I am lucky to have a community gospel choir, The Shoreline Soul, which practices and performs twice yearly under the direction of Angela Clemons. It is truly a highlight of my year to sing with this amazing director, hear the incredibly close harmonies, and actually clap, move and sing at the same time... amazing. I leave the rehearsals exhausted and exhilarated, feeling a release of energy and prayer that can only come through lifting my voice.

The gospel tune was chosen for two reasons: first, because I love it, and second, because today is June Teenth, the commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Texas, 1865. Not that long ago...

Prayer Flag Project: Day 18 Cooperation

Today's prayer is for universal cooperation and working together for common goals. Where better do we learn about teamwork than as children playing sports?

I was searching for the words to use on the tag (in my handy 1948 Girl Scout Handbook that has given me so much inspiration for this project) when I came across this description of sportsmanship... "...it means putting the good of your team ahead of yourself. There is no place for a girl who must be the "whole show" on any team or in any sport". In other words, sacrifice for the good of the team, making the group's goals more important than your own, and using self control and good communication skills at all times. Those qualities, by the way, lead to winning not only in sports but in life. Wouldn't our government benefit from earning the Girl Scout Sportsmanship badge?

I pray that our leaders work together, and that they take a suggestion or two from the children they see every day... raise your hand, don't interrupt, listen to suggestions, follow the rules, and play like a team.

Today's flag was made in a hurry to make the day's deadline (it is almost midnight!), after a very long day at my daughter's softball tournament. The nine positions on her softball team are represented by rectangles of fabric which are stitched to a field of linen. The tag reads, "you have learned team play".

Prayer Flag Project: Day 17 Investing

Today's prayer is for more meaningful investment strategies that strengthen communities and empower women. I especially am moved by an organization called Nest, which is all about the small artisan/crafts person and making their business viable and bringing their goods to a larger market.

Nest Mission Statement

Nest is a nonprofit organization that empowers female artists and artisans around the world. Using a unique combination of interest-free microfinance loans, mentoring from established designers, as well as a market in which to sell their crafts, Nest helps its loan recipients create successful small businesses. Nest instills pride of ownership, preserves ancient artistic traditions and successfully moves women from poverty to self-sufficiency.

(This is not an advertisement for Nest, nor is it an endorsement. I just love the idea of what they do. As in all companies and charities, do your own research before you buy or donate).

I pray for fair lending, available low interest credit, and good results. I hope that these organizations help women bring their families out of poverty and improve the children's opportunities for education and employment.

Today's flag is formed from a hand pieced block that I pulled out of my scrap pile. A dollar bill was slashed (now that was hard to do...) and woven into the twine window salvaged from a potato bag. The tags read clothing 15%, recreation 8%, personal 10%, food 27%, rent 30%, savings 10% and were taken from an interesting vintage Home Budget bank. The bank contained 12 compartments and had slots through which its owner could slip a bill or coins. Each compartment was meant to encourage savings for a different purpose, and the papers were meant to be slid into a tiny frame on each box.

Prayer Flag Project: Day 16 Inspiration

Today's prayer is for Inspiration. I hope that I continue to be inspired to work on this project, and that others are inspired to join in. I pray that this project inspires people to hope, to dream, and to pray for a better world. And I also pray that inspiration leads to action, and action leads to change.

This flag is made from a folded vintage handkerchief. I wonder if its original maker would mind... it is edged with beautiful tatting, and has a lovely white embroidered flower in the upper left corner. The shell photograph was printed on organza and is quilted through the folded handkerchief and a layer of wool batting. The tag reads, "She adores every fibre", and is clipped from a discarded vintage novel. The piece was photographed on silk velvet... another "fibre" I love...

Prayer Flag Project Day 15: Transcendence

How many times have we said it... "Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who have sinned against us"? The second part of that prayer is harder than the first, at least for me. Today my prayer is that I let go of things that bother me, of past words or actions that have hurt me, and that I truly forgive. Let go. Forget. Move on. Rise above. Transcend.

Today's flag is made of linen and wool, and is machine and hand stitched.

June 15 marks the half way point of the project: fifteen of thirty flags have been stitched and hung. This past week's flags were hung on the deer netting in my garden before I left for my morning walk.

This is the view from my studio window. It is a wonder I ever get anything done!

Prayer Flag Project Day 14: Flag Day

When looking at the calendar this morning, it struck me that it is "Flag Day", a day I remember well from my grade school days. We wore patriotic colors, sang the first verse of "You're a Grand Ole Flag", had an assembly with veterans showing us how to fold the flag. We stood at attention when the colors were raised on the school's flag pole, and we were proud of our country and respectful of our nation's symbol.

My prayer is for those who carry their country's flag in foreign lands... that they return safely and represent their homeland with pride. I pray for Peace, and the end of all conflict. I hope for diplomatic solutions to our world's problems, and for creative solutions to border disputes. Those are high hopes, I know, but I believe that they are achievable.

The image on today's flag was transferred to muslin using a toner copy, gum arabic, and oil paint technique. It has been in my pile of scraps for several years, just waiting for a project like this. The soldiers and flag are outlined in thread, and a slight coloring is added with water color pencils. I've used this same image in several pieces in the past, including "Pray for Peace" and a series of Artist Trading Cards which were published in a book by Lark Press. The photo was found in my family's album, and I believe it is from the WWI era.

This marks the second full week of the project, and there are now 14 flags in the series.

Prayer Flag Project Day 13: Celebrations

Monday's prayer is for celebrations of all kinds: that they are safe, happy and loving gatherings. We have many family parties in the next few weeks... graduations, a wedding, three birthdays, end of school year bashes and a family reunion. I pray for safe travels, gracious hosts, and no rain!

This flag is made of linen, ric rac, fabric scraps, a milliners flower, silk floss and mulberry paper. The tag reads, "He took me to a party" and was snipped from a vintage novel.

Prayer Flag Project Day 12: All Creatures, Great and Small

Sunday's flag is inspired by another favorite hymn:

I can't think of that music without harkening back to the James Herriott books I read in my youth, or the television series that filled my rainy saturday afternoons while in high school. If you haven't read them, do, and if you have read them, read them again...

Today's flag is cut from an antique linen collar which already had the beautiful satin pleats and lace attached. The bluebird is made of raw edge applique, and held onto the linen with stitching. The tag reads "watch a spider build a web" which is one of the requirements for the "insect" badge in the girlscout handbook. The back of the tag has a picture of a mayfly.

Prayer Flag Project Day 11: Gardens

Today's prayer is for gardens... in homes, schools and communities. It is a hope that our children understand where their food comes from and how it should look when it is consumed. It is a dream that every person who is able should put a seed in the ground and grow something useful, beautiful and delicious.

This week's prayers seem to be centered around food, and for good reason. It is the growing season in New England, and we are surrounded by knee high crops and beautiful local food. Swiss chard, broccoli rabbe, spinach and lettuce are all fresh and ready to be picked in my garden. Our local farms have pick-your-own strawberries, and soon other fruits and vegetables will be ready for harvest. The local schools, however, are still serving USDA approved chicken nuggets and canned corn...

For real innovation in the school cafeteria, go to the edibleschoolyard.org and read about how chef Alice Waters made a huge difference in the Berkeley, CA school system by incorporating a garden into the school's curriculum. Wouldn't it be great if our kids learned math, science, art, history and literature while including good eating habits, stewardship for the earth and healthy choices?

Prayer Flag Project Day 10: Simplicity

Day 10's prayer is for Simplicity. I had a fascination with the Shaker community when I was a child. The beautiful architecture, furniture, mown fields and simplicity of their designs always intrigued me. Their colors were muted, their lines were fluid, and their inventions filled a need. Nothing was wasted, no embellishments were added, and everything they made seemed timeless.

I still admire many of the attributes of the Shakers, and hope that I can pass to my children an appreciation of their Utopian society. The only living Shaker community is just a few miles from my childhood home on Sabathday Lake in New Gloucester, Maine. I used to see the 5 or 6 members in my town as they shopped for groceries and made their runs to the post office. They were kind, mostly elderly folk who always had time for us children when we visited their museum and walked on their property.

Today's flag, Simplicity, is embellished with salvaged yo-yos. The tag reads, "This construction is simple and economical" and refers to an incredibly complicated drawing in the book "Smoley's parallel tables of Slopes & Rises". A snippet of the formula is also on the back of the tag.

The Shaker Anthem, "Simple Gifts" was written by Elder Joseph while he was at the Shaker community in Alfred, Maine. These are the lyrics to his one-verse song:

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gain'd,

Prayer Flag Project Day 9: Organic

Today's prayer is for all the backyard gardeners, corporate farmers, and those in between... that we all can find a solution to the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers that end up polluting the waterways and ruining the oceans. According to Science Daily, the use of nitrogen based fertilizers in the US had quadrupled since the 1960's, leading to run-off into streams, lakes and oceans. The results of excess nitrogen in the waterways are large algae blooms and oxygen depletion in the water, which creates dead zones and alters the chemical balance of our marshes, streams and oceans.

I pray for the realization that we can reduce or eliminate many of these chemicals, and use time tested techniques to enhance production in our gardens and farms. Healthy soil means healthy food and water.

Today's flag, Organic, is made of a vintage place mat found in my husband's grandmother's attic. The embroidery was probably wrought in the 1930's. Black Eyed Susans are a common flower in New England this time of year, and a personal favorite of mine. The tag reads, "We can take care of the soil in our yards" and was clipped from a vintage Girlscout handbook.

Prayer Flag Project Day 8: Daily Bread

"Give us this day, our daily bread"... how many times have we prayed these words? Todays prayer is that all the hungry and impoverished souls in the world have access to healthy food in adequate quantities at a fair price. According to the website 30hourfamine.org, more than a billion people go hungry each day, and nearly 8,000 children - yes, 8,000 children die each day from hunger related illness and famine.

Today's flag is made from upholstery fabric, an old washcloth, and a recipe card. The recipe was so obscure - Gumdrop Bread - that I nearly threw it away, but it seemed to go well with the theme for the day. The tag reads "Give us this day, our daily bread..." and includes a list of different breads on the back.

Prayer Flag Project Day 7: Shelter

I pray for shelter... for a warm and clean place that each person calls his own.

In doing a quick search of the internet, I found this startling statistic on the National Alliance to End Homelessness website. Their most recent data was for 2009.

According to the site, over 656,000 Americans were homeless at one point 2009. Assuming that the count is accurate, and the following statistic was true, the number of people in our country who were living unsheltered was in excess of 262,000. In other words,

While most people experiencing homelessness are sheltered, nearly 4 in 10 were living on the street, in a car, or in another place not intended for human habitation.

Day 7's flag, Shelter, is made of a single layer of linen fabric and a piece of antique lace. Since homelessness is an international issue, the threads and fabrics that form the nest are from every continent except Antarctica. The paper tag reads, "Your home may be one room, apartment, cottage, large house..." and is made of text gleaned from a vintage Girl Scout Handbook.

Today marks the one week point of the project. I snapped a quick photo of the flags in the garden, hung on the stakes for the raspberry bushes.

Prayer Flag Project Day 6: Mothering & Success

Today's flag is a prayer for the success and visibility of a documentary film, The Mothers of Bedford. I hope everyone who reads this post has a moment to pop over to the website, see the trailer, and ultimately, view the film.

My friend Jen McShane is the film maker, and it has been her project for the last five years to document the lives of 5 amazing women as they struggle to become better mothers, active mothers, loving parents and good examples for their children while serving time in a maximum security prison. It is a moving film that is simultaneously funny and sad, serious and uplifting, and ultimately celebrates the bond of mother and child.

Many parents find it hard to imagine being away from a child for a week. Imagine being separated for ten or twenty years? Mothers of Bedford explores the effects of a long-term prison sentence on the mother-child relationship. (quote from MOB website)

Day 6's flag, Mothering & Success, is created from a piece of vintage doily that was edged with yo-yos. The photograph in the background is hand colored, and depicts my grandmother, Ruth Thogerson, as she holds my mother in her arms. A piece of vintage tulle is placed over the photograph, and bars of felted wool are tacked in place to represent the prison experience. The tag reads, "She is to keep that child of hers".

Prayer Flag Project: Day 5 Rest

The prayer for Sunday's flag comes from a favorite hymn we sing on All Saints Sunday (November 1 or there abouts). "For all the saints, who from their labors rest...". Pretty self explanatory... keeping in mind that as Lutherans, we believe in "the sainthood of all believers", so the flag holds a prayer for all of my friends and relatives who have gone to eternal rest before me.

Day 5's flag, Rest, is made of a piece of vintage quilt, with the words of the hymn written in rayon thread. Thread scraps are caught under vintage tulle. the flower is a piece of silk rod. The words on the tag read, "Eternal rest, give to them, O Lord" and were clipped from an old mass book.

Prayer Flag Project: Day 4 Employment

The employment numbers for the month of May were released this week, and it seems that our economy is still sluggish, as so many people are continuing their search for meaningful work.

Today's prayer is for full employment for all who seek it... meaningful work for all who can work... just compensation... and a safe environment in which to labor.

Day 4's flag, Employment, is made of upholstery linen scraps, floss, embroidery silk, buttons and a scrap of an antique quilt block. The hatched base of the weaving is the twine "window" from a bag of potatoes (I can't throw anything away, thus the first line of weaving "How to Utilize Everything..."). The words which are woven into the twine are inked pages from a vintage Girl Scout Handbook and refer to my current studio work. Today's tag reads, Work... It is a good idea.

Today's flag is for my Sisters in Cloth friend, Barb, who has just learned she has breast cancer. Barb is the epitome of strength, positive energy, and thankfulness that her diagnosis was swift, her tumor is tiny and contained, and that her treatment will be bearable. Her resilience in the face of adversity is admirable, and a lesson to all around her.

Don't we all have Sisters, though, who have been diagnosed with this terrible disease? My mother in law, sister in law, best friend, blood sister, and many others in my near and dear circle have all battled breast cancer. Really, this flag is not just for Barb, but for you all. I pray for Health, Healing, Courage and Strength as you rage against this diagnosis. My favorite quote is from Lady Macbeth, who wanders around her drafty castle after she has gone mad saying, "Out, Out! Damn Spot!"... My feelings exactly.

Day 3's flag is made of a piece of upholstery linen, silk floss, fabric shards, an antique quilt block, and embroidery. The words on the tag say "Fetch me a medical doctor" on one side, and are translated to German on the back. They are snipped from an English/German conversation book carried by a WWII soldier over enemy lines.

June 2nd's flag is for Brenda... You know who you are. As you feel that your world is crumbling, remember the words of St. Francis... Lord, Make me an instrument of your Peace... where there is hatred, let me sow love.

This flag is made of linen, embellished with silk stitchery, antique lace, angelina fibers, and shells. Brenda's quiet prayer is written on a sheer photo transfer of shells. The paper tag is embellished with the words, "and peace" on the back.

Inspired - what a word. We are inspired by so much each day, we hardly even know that the inspiration has taken place at times, or where the inspiration will lead. The word "inspire" means, at its most basic level, to breath. And breath is wind, and wind is the breath of God. Inspired.

I am particularly inspired by a form of spiritual fiber, as an interpretation of breath, word and prayer. Prayer Flags are part of the ancient Buddhist tradition. We have several strings hanging in our home... not because we are Buddhist or even know what the writing or symbols upon the colored fabric mean, but because they are beautiful and a reverent reminder that our prayers are heard and answered. In a nutshell, it is believed that the prayers on the flags are lifted to God as they flutter in the wind. Everyone who is touched by that wind, is touched by the prayers, and they are spread through the world, extending happiness, good will, and Peace. What a wonderful concept.

Flags in my studio

I have made versions of these textiles for years. My church has hung them in our sanctuary, complete with the prayers of little children asking for Peace on Earth and for the Hungry to be fed. My most recent flags were made several years ago, as my friend Suzanne lay dying, and were strung above her bed. Those were the hardest to make, but the most heart felt.

I was recently inspired again upon seeing Nina's May 30th post about her flags that hang outside her home in Norway. Those have gained beauty as they wave in the breeze and send a message of hope, health and healing.

This month I am starting a new project - The Prayer Flag Project- with a new flag each day. Each flag will be made in less than an hour, then hang outside for a while, its word and sentiment dissolving into the wind and being spread to all whom the wind touches. They will be a living, breathing, kinetic journal of June.

Rest in Peace

June 1: Rest in Peace: Flag is antique linen and lace, silk thread, a millner's flower, as well as ripped rags. It is a prayer for the family of Marty, who passed away this weekend from Parkinson's disease. The paper tags, which are always part of my flags, have words on them cut from an antique cookbook, explaining how to tell a good egg from a bad egg. Marty was a good egg, and I know his family will miss him very much.

I See a Quilt That Needs a Fence

This is the wonderful view from my new studio... and believe it or not, it has changed dramatically in the past few months. Doesn't it look like a quilt? What does it need??? A real fence.

The transformation will happen in a few weeks when the temporary deer fence is removed and the new picket fence is installed. (Deer are a major pest here - the picket fence will be low, and the deer fence will actually be reinstalled inside, but nearly invisible because it is made of black netting).

So why the title? I love fences! They protect gardens, add interest to landscape, and are a great place for birds to perch. I thought it would be fun to show how I make a fabric fence for my collages...

First, I make a template the size of the picket. For the small 5x7" pieces, that is a 2"x3" index card. I change that measurement accordingly for a larger piece.

Mark the template in the center of one short side and 1" down on both long sides. Connect the dots.

Cut the two lines and you have a "perfect picket".

Trace the template onto the fence fabric and cut out the picket.

Place the picket on a 1 1/2"x3" piece of shaddow fabric and glue in place. Trim the shaddow fabric by 1/4" as shown in the picture below, making sure to keep the top flat. This adds depth.

You are done! Make the picket longer or shorter, wider or thinner, depending on your project. I find that when I sew the piece down, it adds so much interest to stitch in the wood grain, a few darker lines to make the corners more pronounced, or a connecting piece between several of the fence posts. I often place a flowering tree behind the post, a few flowers in front, or grasses nearby and see how the piece changes...

Fences add so much structure and interest to a garden, and I can't wait until mine is built. More photos when that happens.

New Studio Reveal

Nature's Inspiration

Several weeks ago, I made a huge decision and moved my studio from the lower level (aka basement) of my home to a new, upstairs location. After all is said and done, I have only one comment: How could it be that I spent all of those years underground? Although I loved the cozy space that I had carved out in my basement, there is nothing, I repeat NOTHING like natural light and wood floors.

Quilts and Fabrics Stacked on Shelves

I love the color of the walls, which is the same buttery yellow I had painted my basement studio, but they seem so much warmer in the natural light. I have a closet in which I can hide my unsightly art materials, and a cabinet which holds lots of the rest.

Vintage Books and Treasures

My books and fabrics, tools and papers that I constantly use are readily available on a slim bookshelf, and my walls are adorned with my own artwork. I now have a working desk, file cabinet, and telephone that are nearby and available for the "other side" of my artistic endeavors.

It makes me happy to have a room of my own, and I feel more productive.

Mary's Garden: Embellish

Embellish... hmm... just bought a new "Embellisher" (felting) machine a few weeks before the theme was announced... I wonder what I'll make???

The central image of "Mary's Garden" is made entirely on the felting machine. Silks, cotton lace and vintage linens were torn, cut and placed over wool batting and needle felted together. Added scraps of hand dyed papers, paper netting from potato bags, millner's flowers and embroidery were then applied, again, with the embellisher. I then flipped the piece over and stitched the picture of the dog and girl, using dark blue thread in both my bobbin and top threads. The resulting piece was then embellished onto a piece of leafy fabric which I had quilted in hot pink, and a few 3-d flowers and butterflies were also applied.

Embellish? Yes...

Confessions of...The Closet Quilter

When did this world become a confessional? Reality (?) TV makes it look normal! Blogs, Twitter, and especially Facebook give us all multiple opportunities each day to join the line at the confessional booth, maybe with a dim hope of feeling better after we expose our faults and fantasies to the world.

I have many faults and failings, so now it is my turn.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned...

Me: Sometimes, I buy clothes just so I can cut them up.
   Priest: So you like to shred your clothes? Why would you do that?
Me: No, I buy the clothes because the fabric is so cool, I want to use it in a piece of artwork or a quilt. Or make pillows out of it. Or just have it. But I don't really want the clothes.
   Priest: You don't want the clothes? So why do you buy them?
Me: To. Cut. Them. Up.
   Him: Yes, You have established that. But they are clothes - you can't wear them if you cut them up.
Me: I know, and I feel really guilty when I do it, but I just can't stop. Like the other day- I ruined this beautiful dress so I could use the fabric to make a pot holder.

   Him: A POTHOLDER?
Me: You know, the thing to protect your hands from hot pans?
   Priest: (muttering) You have a problem...
Me: That's why I'm here... I have fewer and fewer clothes in my closet, and more and more scraps in my scrap bag. Yesterday I cut up a beautiful linen skirt to make this change purse...

   Him: That fabric is faded. Did you wear it a lot?
Me: Yes, it was my favorite skirt for years, but it was wildly out of style, and -
   Him: And you cut it up!
Me: I do have a problem, don't I? Hey, is that cassock cotton or rayon?
   Him: Hmm... I have been wearing this black robe for years - why do you ask?
Me: I wonder... Let's cut it up.... I'll make you something!
   Him: You don't need absolution, you need a 12 step program...

Summer Dressing: Fantasy Frock

I've been hankering for something new. My summer wardrobe, recently pulled from its winter attic home and washed, is not inspiring me at all. The whites aren't fresh and crisp. The skirts are too short, the pants are too long, and the colors are so "2010".

I want something fresh, different, and maybe just a bit sassy.

On a recent trip to Ohio I spotted this in the store window...

Another Royal Wedding... My Own

Today is my anniversary... 22 years of wedded bliss to this fella here...

A few things have changed since our wedding day... I don't think I can fit into my grandmother's dress anymore...

We look a bit older and wiser (wider?) now,

and our family has grown, and grown!

Yoga Kind of Day...

Yoga Mat Carrier

April Showers may bring May Flowers, but they are putting a damper on my exercise routine... no running or walking when the sky opens up and pours down like it has been doing here, but lots of yoga.

Of course, I arrive in style at class with my handy Yoga Mat Carrier slung over my shoulder, and have even been known to wear a silk headband to keep my tresses from falling into my eyes. Now if only I could get my hips even, my shoulders straight, and my hamstrings to stretch, I'd be in great shape!

Quail Family

I just received news from the Brush Gallery in Lowell, MA that my piece, Quail Family, will be part of the "For the Birds" exhibit from May 7-June 18th. This is exciting news on several levels: first of all, it is my first time being jurried into the Brush Gallery after several attempts. But most exciting for me, the jurror is David Sibley, whose gorgeously illustrated books and guides on birding are a constant inspiration. I am very excited to see the works of many artists using birds as inspiraiton. Horray, and what a thrill to be part of this great exhibit!

And congratulations to my pal Diane Wright who's work is also being hung at the show...

101 Patchwork Projects: Pojagi Seam Technique

Do You Use Glue??? Why, yes! I do...

I was scanning the message headers in my email this morning and came across the title, "Do you cheat with glue?"- now that caught my eye. I use glue all of the time with my fabric collages, and I am fascinated to see how others "keep it all together"...

So imagine my surprise when I opened the email and saw one of my nests featured on the Cloth, Paper, Scissors Today newsletter. The editor, Cate Prato, has what seems to be a "love/hate" relationship with her sewing machine at times, so she made a nearly "no sew" version of the nest and changed some of the steps in the process.

I really love when people do this- take a technique and make it their own. I was discussing this very topic yesterday with my friend Diane Wright. We both love to read books about fiber art and take lots of classes, but we don't want to make a quilt or complete a project that looks like the sample, or suddenly lose our own voices and start quilting like the teacher. Taking a technique and making it your own is the duty- and delight- of the artist.

April Showers... Free for the asking

It has been a cold and riany two weeks in Southern New England... and you, my friends, will benefit from the dreary weather. Cold, wet and windy days lead to Spring Cleaning, and I have found some vintage treasures to share... just for the asking.

Stamps - who wants them? I have several piles of cancelled stamps which I couldn't throw out after clearing out an aging uncle's home. He saved stamps for years, and his collection was vast. I have gleaned what I want, and now it is your turn... some are still on the paper, but most have been soaked and pressed, ready to add to your latest collage. Dates range from 1930-1980.

Leave a note in the comments with your email, and I'll happily send them to you... while supplies last.

So What's New?

That is something my mother always asked me. She didn't want to know what bugged me (no one wants to hear whining) or what I was making for dinner (meatloaf again???). She had no patience for small talk and no desire to gossip (just like her daughter). She liked real news and great stories, fresh ideas and promises of lively conversation at the dinner table. She was a real gem, and I miss her daily. So Mom, here's what's new...

1. I have restarted my Etsy shop and have listed six new items this week.

Just because I can, I am breaking with my theme and doing something different. It is, after all, Wednesday, and why not celebrate a week half done with some play time?

Angelina Walks the Dog

Once again, I got out my new felting machine and tried something entirely new. I have been thinking about some of the series I have done in the past using old studio photographs, and wanted to try adding stitch and line to a felted piece.

This piece is approximately 12"x12", and is mostly silk, paper and linen. There are a few bits of cotton lace and a vintage piece of embroidery from my stash. Lots of hand stitching. Potato sack lattice (is that made of paper or twine?) and velvet leaves. Hand dyed silk rods. Mullberry paper. The dark blue stitch line was done from the back, and is drawn from of old photos. The dog is the RCA Jack Russel Terrier... my favorite breed. Wouldn't this make a great nursery rhyme series? Portraits of children? Memory quilt?

Here's the original photo - just a black and white photocopy that was given to me by a student in one of my classes. I have used this again and again. The three children are so sweet in their best clothes, and so uncomfortable. It reminds me of taking my brood to the photographer for an hour of fidgeting and a few seconds of smiles.

By the way, adding the dark stitching over the grid is absolutly inspired by Jane LaFazio's little "quiltlettes" on her awesome blog. Take a look.

Nest Construction: Tutorial

How do they do it? A few twigs, a bit of mud, some grass, lots of back-and-forth... and then there's an awesome construction.

No architecture school.

No banging with hammers.

No plans... but a great result with the materials at hand.

Here's a quick tutorial of how I make my nests. You can read more about the process in the April/May issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.

Prepared Background with nest base and eggs

1. Start with a prepared background of your choice. I use either fabric or paper for this layer. It is glued/fused to a layer of thick interfacing like Peltex 70, and the other background elements like branches, birds, leaves, etc. have been stitched down.
2. Cut an oval out of fabric and stitch or glue it to your background. Add eggs now, or later if they will be stuffed.

Adding Fibers

3. Arrange nest fibers around the base, and tack them in place with the machine.
4. Weave additional fibers in as needed, and glue pieces in place if necessary.
5. Add all embellishments, then frame in a deep shaddowbox frame behind acid free mat board.

You can do so much with these collages. I've used postage stamps in my backgrounds, milner's leaves and flowers for embellishments, stuffed eggs as 3d components, and even vintage cookbook text (about cooking eggs, of course!) as hidden messages within the pieces.

Making art, just like making a home, is all about adding your own personality to your work.

The Concept of Nest

Birds are master builders. They use the materials at hand as the construction components for their homes, and work, often in cooperation with their mates, to make a sturdy shelter from the storms of spring. The nests in our yard are so beautiful. Hedges of firebushes line our driveway and provide the perfect location for the robins. One of those nests, made of mud and grass, has weathered two winters and sheltered nearly 6 clutches of eggs.

My nest collages are also made with the materials I have at hand: scraps of fabric, bits of yarn, snips of threads from the sewing machine, and even shredded text gleaned from old tomes found at garage sales. I am just like the robins- I use what is around me to create these little gems, and hope that the result weathers the storm around me.

When I was preparing for this week of posts about all things nesty, I did a google search of nests, hoping to find some interesting copyright free images to include with these posts. Behold, the glory of the world wide web... I found something much more interesting.

Nest, an organization that provides microfinancing to craftswomen across the world, is a wonderful source of creative inspiration and a great organization. They live the credo that when women are given opportunities to earn a fair wage with the goods and services they create, the entire community benefits. Children are fed and educated. Homes are built and furnished. Futures are made secure. Families stay together.

Theme of the Week: Nests

New Article in Quilting Arts Magazine

Nests are here, there and everywhere these days. The birds are making them in my back yard... each morning this past week I have been awoken by trilling titmice, cardinals and robins, all in search of mates and starting a home. Each bird's nest is a bit different, reflecting their environment and needs. Some are mere depressions in the sand to keep the eggs from rolling away, and others include elaborate woven structures that cradle an entire family. They are all beautiful, functional, and carry an instant reminder that all of the creatures of the earth share the need for home and shelter.

Aren't we all like the birds? My home reflects the community in which I live, my own personal aesthetic and my need for creativity, warmth and comfort. Even this photo of one of my first nest collages indicates a bit of my personality... how I love old things (a broken copper ladle from my grandparents' home and an ancient volume of Huck Finn), nature (real nests and feathers), the outdoors (the awesome book by Louise Dickenson Rich, We Took To the Woods) and art.

In celebration of nests, nesting, nest eggs, a nest of one's own, and my newest article in Quilting Arts Magazine, Feathering Your Nest, I'm declaring this week to be officially "Nest Week". Yesterday's post, a quiet reminder from many bloggers, got me thinking. I have donated money for many disasters lately, from cyclones and floods, to this latest earthquake in Japan. Locally, I donate artwork to at least 8-10 charities a year for many causes, from homeless shelters to autism benefits. We all are inundated with opportunities to give, but I am going to add one more... my own little auction to benefit the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Remember that little robin I showed earlier in the week? I have added an egg and paper scraps to the nest, and some bead embellishment. It is now matted to 11x18, framed in a black wood frame, and would normally sell for $175-$200. I make and sell dozens of these pieces every year, and they are collected by many individuals and displayed in their homes and offices.

I really do hate deadlines. They just loom over me at times, and I feel pressure to complete a project in a time period that feels unnatural, and ultimately, the piece is not as good as I want it to be. My response lately has been to forgo entering shows if I don't already have a piece "ready" that fits the requirements. That has left me with fewer pieces entered, accepted, and seen in the venues I wish to be part of. I need to turn over a new leaf.

This week I am restarting the third piece in a series of Connecticut views... the first two were commissioned by Smilow Medical Center, and the third will be ready for a big show, hopefully by the end of the summer. In order to keep my options open for showing, though, I won't be able to post the photos. Not fair!

In the mean time, the pictures in this post have been entered into a show about birds... and they were already "ready"...

A Robin for Robin

I just finished this little Robin with Apple Blossoms and scanned it onto TAP Transfer paper for a client who wanted to make a washable quilt block for a new baby in her family. Just seeing this bird building its next on the flowering apple branch makes me happy, because I know it will be a reality in just a few weeks! The transfer came out great- I've not done that before, but can tell that it is much easier than any other method I have used for transfering images.

What do you think? Should I offer copyrighted images on ETSY, pre-printed onto TAP, ready to iron onto fabric? Who would buy them? How much would they sell for? Should I offer a kit for a pillow, with fabrics, embellishments, and the transfer? Any ideas?

Pretty Little Quilt Update

Unwashed

The "Pretty Little Quilt" was actually quite dirty, and I suspect, had never been washed... so a three hour soak in a pot of gentle detergent and room temperature water yielded interesting results...

1. Lots and lots of dirt!
2. Lots of red dye!
3. Unfortunately, all of the fabric on the back disintegrated, probably due to the mordant breaking down the fibers. The fabric literally shredded, and much of it was in a lump at the bottom of the pot.

I then took off the ruffle which was the culprit for the dye leaching. The ruffle was badly faded, and had started as a beautiful hot pink. It would have been lovely to keep it intact, but it was just not in the cards.

Next, I started pulling off the foundation fabric on the back of six of the blocks which was made of the same fabric as the backing. What a shame... it came off as easily as tissue paper.

The result is not as pretty as the starting piece... by a long shot. Washing was necessary, but destructive, and has really made me rethink what I will do with the piece. It is in much better shape in some ways... the wool fabrics have texture now, and are beautifully "fulled". The beautiful indigo foundation fabrics will be helpful in dating the piece, as will the mordant identification which ultimately ruined it. (I'll look in my books by Barbara Brackman and see if I can identify any of the fabrics by manufacturer...). None of the holes in the wool or cotton fabrics grew, but they are more noticeable now that the piece is clean.

Pretty Little Quilt

What shall I do with this pretty little antique quilt? My friend Barb was giving it away to the local charity shop, but I snagged it before it was too late. It is composed of 24 four inch wool hand stitched log cabin blocks, with strips about 1/2" wide. I can see indigo foundation fabric through the moth holes, and can feel no batting behind the blocks. There is a sweet sateen ruffle around the edge that has faded from cherry red to light pink. This must have been a doll quilt for some very lucky child.

I plan to wash it, but then what? should I take it apart and salvage the best blocks? Should I put a bird on it? What do you think?

Because I Felt Like It...

I have been holed up in my studio all day playing with my new machine... a Baby Lock needle felting Embellisher. What a trip! This silk and wool scarf is my first project. There is not one stitch of sewing in the entire piece, and it is lined with silk velvet. Scrumptious.

My husband was intrigued.

Him: So what is that machine?
Me: My new Embellisher.
Him: Why do you need a new sewing machine?
Me: I don't. This isn't a sewing machine. It is an Embellisher.
Him: It looks like a sewing machine. See? You are sewing on it...
Me: (Rolling my eyes) But it is not a sewing machine. I need (want) it. It does things my machine can't do.
Him: Like what?
Me: Like if I told you, you'd be so bored you would probably fall asleep right here. Let's just call it an early birthday gift and you don't have to worry your pretty head about it.
Him: Great! I'll call the jeweler and tell them to sell the tiara I had on hold...
Little does he know, I could probably fashion a tiara with it...

*6" strips of light green wool are felted end to end, making a 55" scarf

*Retro design is cut from laundered wool and felted to the green wool

*Silk velvet ovals are applied with the felter to the purple wool

This piece took about 2 hours to make, has no sewing involved (I did have to piece the velvet because that wasn't long enough, but that is it) and looks stunning on, either front or back showing.

Bread for All

adated from a recipe in

Baking with Julia

1 1/2 tbs yeast

1/4 c honey

1 tbs malt extract

2 1/4 c warm water

1 tbs oil

3 1/2 c white flour

1 1/2 c whole wheat flour

1/2 c each: spelt, amaranath and brown rice flours

1 tbs salt

::In the bowl of your mixer, proof yeast with the honey and 1/2 cup of the water, letting it sit for 5 minutes

::Combine all flours together in a bowl and set aside

::When the yeast is bubbly, add the remaining water, honey, oil and malt extract, mixing all of the wet ingredients together.

::Add about half of the flour mixture at low speed, and then the remainder of the flours mixing with a dough hook for about 2 minutes. Add the salt, and knead for 10 minutes.

::Turn the dough into an oiled bowl and set aside at room temperature until the bread doubles in size. This usually takes 1-2 hours.

::Divide the dough and knead into shape. Place in two oiled bread pans and let rise again until the dough grows over the tops of the pans. This takes about 1 hour.

Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Remove immediately from the pans and cool on a rack.

Enjoy!

Who couldn't love this pooch? Of course, my pug, Elvis, is probably the cutest dog in the world. He sleeps in the sun when I am at the computer, follows me around the house, walks miles with me (ok, half miles) and is my constant companion. This is usually fine, but when he is in my studio, the little rascal plops down on top of my feet, no matter where they are... even when I am sewing. In order to avoid a "run away machine" and keep the dog out of trouble, I designed this cute futon with Elvis in mind. The quilted top is made of hand dyed fabrics, upholstery samples and even some salvaged scraps from my daughter's favorite childhood pants. Add some denim for the pillow case, and it is a stylish addition to my studio...

Giving and Living in a World of Abundance: Give Away

My husband has been reminding me lately that we live in "a world of abundance". It is his way of being thankful and counting his blessings. It is his way of reminding me, as well as those around him, that we are blessed with more than enough to keep us going physically and nourish our souls.

This has been a long week for my children. Since January, we've had 8 snow days, and now we are nearing the end of a week off school for February vacation. We live in a world of abundance of days off, too, it seems! They feel left out, though, because there was no trip to Disney, no week at the slopes, no cruise to the islands, and no warm sunshine at a beach. Their vacation consisted of a weekend with my family in Maine, dinners out at local eateries, birthday parites, and a trip to the aquarium. I think it was fun, but they feel left out.

This post (scroll to Feb. 8th-can't get the link to go to that date!) from Cara got me thinking, though. How can I help my children appreciate the abundance in their lives, without preaching about it and pointing out how important it is to be thankful for what we have, while making sure that others are well taken care of, too? How can I help to instill empathy in their growing minds, and ensure that the next generation takes care of their brothers and sisters? How do I teach giving as a way of life to my children?

They see us give money to church and to other charities, and they donate used toys and clothes they have outgrown to children in need at a local shelter, they watch as we donate hours to our favorite outreach programs, but I fear that they still don't really "get it". What would it be like to live without "the basics"- soap, paper towels, a tooth brush, or hot water?

I'm considering a Charity Camp for April Vacation... living without something that we consider an every-day-convenience, and donating that thing (like a case of paper towels) to the local Women's shelter... would that help them understand? I'd love to know your thoughts and suggestions.

A Good Week

All things considered, it has been a very good week.

The Quilting Arts TV taping was a great experience and a real high point in my fledgling quilting career. I had a good time with host, Pokey Bolton, and her entourage from the QA offices in Stow. They all made us so relaxed and rhe episodes were taped without a hitch.

You'll have to keep an eye out for the 800 series of shows which will be available, I hear, in July. My birds are featured,

I met two other fiber artists whose work I admire - Diane Doran and Judith Trager.

Jeanne Cook-Delpit, the Director of National Events from Bernina, gave me some great tips for using my sewing machine. We all had a chance to play with the models she brought for the set and get used to the way they worked before we had to use them on camera.

I returned home to a family who was happy to see me (that is always nice) and a to-do list about a mile long.

One more happy event? I received my copy of the Winter SAQA Journal and my quilt, Marshview, is featured on page 4.

Yes, a very good week indeed.

Quilting Arts TV!

It is so hard keeping a secret like this, but now that I am back from taping three segments for series 800 of Quilting Arts TV, the word is out... I'm a guest presenter on next season's show! It was a great experience to be a part of this wonderful and informative program. I am still pinching myself to make sure it is all true.

I flew to Cleveland on Sunday, and was at the studio bright and early so I could have my makeup professionally applied before the taping. Here's a photo with QA Managing Editor Helen Gregory, right before we taped my first segment featuring Topstix construction and the Contemporary Table Runner pattern I published in the Autumn issue of Quilt Scene magazine. Helen was great fun, and kept us all on our toes as we prepared our models before taping.

Diane Doran and "Return of the Grackle"

Two other artists also taped on monday: Diane Rusin Doran's award winning quilt, Return of the Grackle, is pictured here. This masterpiece absolutely glows with color, and the machine quilting is so dense and intricate, it is a real inspiration. Diane also taped three segments on the show, and you'll love seeing how she uses digital imagery to create her pieces. Judith Trager, from Boulder, was also a treat to meet. She not only taped segments for the show, but also a workshop video that highlights her amazing techniques.

Lastly, the three of us met up with my quilting hero, Carol Taylor, who was in Cleveland for a week of workshops. It's great how serendipity brought us all together for a wonderful day of quilting and the opportunity to make new friendships and connections.

Thank you, Laura Waslowski of ARTFABRIK for sending a box full of yardage for me to drool over. I am planning two big (for me) quilts, and needed lots of Blue, which I seem to have loads of, but none is right. Laura sent the box before Snowmegeddon hit Chicago this week, so it arrived unscathed and earlier than I expected. I was supposed to take the four pieces out and then share the trunk show with Sisters in Cloth... but what's a girl to do? I want 12 pieces, not four!

I was just encouraged by the owner of my local Audobon Shop to mosey over to ornitholigist and birdsong lover Lang Elliot's blog, at The Music of Nature. I have never heard a piece of music so beautifully mimicing a bird, and so lovingly transcribed. It is just lovely... click on the link and have a listen yourself. You will be hooked!

The Cactus Wren, above, was the first bird portrait I ever made, more than 3 years ago now. Lang has also captured that beautiful voice on another post in the San Antonio Texas Chaparal Wildlife Management Area. You can also hear the Road Runner in that recording, as well as many other birds I've not yet worked on. Although these are older pieces, they still capture the essence of the bird with the fabric - which incidentally, is what Lang is doing with his recordings. Now I just have to find a way to get the actual bird's transcribed song into the background of the piece, as I did with the Mozart on my recent Robin.

Wash the Dishes

Today we have another snow day for my children. That makes seven days off in the last four weeks. I have no more ideas for how to make shoveling fun. They are beginning to suspect that when I say, "Let's get all the snow from the driveway and put it in a big pile so we can have a snow fort" really means "go shovel the driveway". They are too smart to keep this going. So I stopped doing the asking, and now have "Chore Birds" doing it for me...

Silent Spring is a lovely little quilt that guards my front door in winter. It is made of reclaimed wool from a jacket of mine, and a bit of hand dyed wool I found at a quilt show. Laura Wasilowski's threads (surprise, surprise) are used to couch the stems and create a fence in the background, and a jumble of beads and baubles form the snow and rock wall.

Ok, that's a lie. We got another 15+ inches last night, but I can dream, can't I? You can't see it in the photos, but the plow left about 10' of white stuff in front of the mailbox and the road is cleared only the width of one car. I don't think there will be a delivery today...

But we did have fun! Our driveway is about 75' long, and the little tractor we "had to have" is stuck in the shed, so we shoveled by hand. Here is one of my little "tax deductions" posing with a shovel. Not much help, but she looks good.

Sam is playing "Yukon Cornelius" with the icicles, and Gerard is heading to clear the ice jams from the roof. Our next home is a condo.

This is a Quilt: My SAQA Donation

This is a new piece from my Songbird Series which was made for the SAQA exhibit, This is a Quilt. I have been experimenting with using paper in my small quilts for some time, and had an epiphany this morning as I was folding a paper crane from music manuscript. The graphic effect of the manuscript paper punctuated with the notes, staff and script in the book is beautiful. Since my piano playing days are long behind me (even after years of lessons, I still find it very hard to learn new music), I have plenty of papers for my artwork. It was actually my husband who said, "You should use this..." and six hours later, voila!

The paper has been altered with inks, cut into squares, and sewn to Peltex 70. The bird and nest are then applied to the background with thread.

Quilt Title: Songbird #1: Robin

Statement: It is no secret that I am inspired by the world around me. The colors of the October sky, shadows from the barren trees in winter, and the sweet music of flocks of songbirds all inspire me in so many ways. The truth is, I believe that the “medium” I use to express my self artistically doesn’t really matter. When I was very young, I chose music. As I grew into early adulthood, I wrote poetry. Four semesters of pottery class certainly helped boost my GPA in college. But the result has always been the same. My artwork reflects what is important in my life and the beauty I see and feel all around me. I am now middle-aged and I choose to make art quilts. So why is this a quilt? It has three layers, stitched together, and uses fiber (paper and fabric) as its medium.
