Ten Things I Loved About Denmark: Number Ten... Family

This is the final post about my trip, and I definitely saved the best for last.  The highlight of our trip was meeting our extended Danish family.  It all started in the airport in Toronto...  we had heard that cousins from Canada would be visiting at the same time, but we had no idea they would be on our plane.  We'd never met Kirsten (in red), her daughter Angela and grand daughter Emma before, but recognized the "family chin" when we saw it.  Our genes are quite strong!

Cousin Karen holding a picture of my great grandparents, Vivike and Troels

The baptismal gown was made by Troels' mother, and worn by him, his 6 children, many of his grandchildren including Karen, Karen's children and grandchildren.  You could say it is the best worn baptismal gown in history.  Karen opened her home to us for a wonderful lunch and dinner.  She looks just like my grandmother (her aunt).

Cousin Signe holding a knit blanket, also made by my great grandmother Vivike Uldall

Signe opened her home to us, drove us all over northern Denmark, and is a true treasure and a lovely friend.  I am so happy to have met her!

Annette (middle) is a cousin by marriage, and she too hosted us for a wonderful lunch, introduced us to her sister Merete whose quilting and embroidery are exquisite, and fun brother Stefen.  A day with such wonderful extended family was just what Heidi and I needed!

The Roskilde cousins escaped my camera, but were also wonderful and fun hosts.  They picked us up at midnight after a concert, and even drove us to the airport.  Such unexpected kindness...  such wonderful family.

Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also...  my treasure is my family, near and far, who will always be near to my heart.

I have had similar experiences with my extended family in Norway and my husband's in Sweden. They are lovely people. Thanks for posting about your dear relatives. And now I know where you got your name. How nice to be named after your great-grandmother.
